The search for the next "American Idol" will end tonight, and a winner will finally be chosen. Afterback-to-back Disney-themed episodes, thejudges and viewers at homewhittled the competition down fromseven to threeby May 12. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Broadway legend behind "Hamilton," assisted the remaining contestants with their performances last week. Breanna Nix, John Foster and Jamal Roberts, who made the Top 3, will be heading home for a special visit before their final performances. TheTop 14singers will perform alongside the trio for one last chance to dazzle the crowd, or risk fading into oblivion. The finale will feature additional performances from a number of musical artists, including The Goo Goo Dolls, Good Charlotte, Jessica Simpson, Jelly Roll, Patti LaBelle, Salt-N-Pepa, Jennifer Holliday, Josh Groban, Brandon Lake, Myles Smith and Kirk Franklin. As if the lineup wasn't already jam-packed enough, "American Idol" judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie will also jump on stage for some time on the mic. LONDON (Reuters) -Elton John on Sunday accused the British government of "committing theft" by proposing that tech firms could train artificial intelligence models on the UK's music and creative output without guaranteeing proper recompense. Creative industries globally are grappling with the legal and ethical implications of AI models that can produce their own work after being trained on existing material. Britain, which Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to become an AI superpower, has proposed relaxing copyright laws to allow AI developers to train their models on any material to which they have lawful access. The proposal would require creators to proactively opt out to stop their work being used. The biggest names in the industry, including John, Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ed Sheeran and others, have urged the government to change course, saying the proposal will make it even harder for young people to make a living in the creative industries. "The danger is for young artists, they haven't got the resources to keep checking or fight big tech," John told the BBC. "It's criminal and I feel incredibly betrayed." "A machine ... doesn't have a soul, doesn't have a heart, it doesn't have human feeling, it doesn't have passion. Human beings, when they create something, are doing it ... to bring pleasure to lots of people," he said. John has sold more than 300 million records over a six-decade career. A supporter of Starmer's Labour Party, he said he had always sought to support young artists and would continue to fight against the changes. The government says it is seeking a solution that will enable creative industries and AI companies to flourish. It said on Sunday it was consulting on measures, would publish an assessment on the economic impact of any move, and will not sign off on anything unless it is "completely satisfied they work for creators". Britain has long outperformed in the creative industries, with thousands employed in sectors including theatre, film, advertising, publishing and music. BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Austrians were getting ready Sunday to welcome back home and celebrate classically trained singer JJ, who won the 69thEurovision Song Contestfor their country with "Wasted Love," a song that combines operatic, multi-octave vocals with a techno twist. The 24-year-old countertenor, who sings at the Vienna State Opera, was expected to land at Vienna's airport in the afternoon and hold a press conference in the evening. JJ, whose full name is Johannes Pietsch, was Austria's third Eurovision winner, after bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst in 2014 and Udo Jürgens in 1966. "This is beyond my wildest dreams. It's crazy," said the singer when being handed the microphone-shaped glass Eurovision trophy after his win in the Swiss city of Basel on Saturday night. "All of Austria is happy" Austria's leaders were among the first to congratulate JJ. On Sunday morning, the country's president, Alexander van der Bellen, celebrated JJ in a video posted on X. "What a success! What a voice! What a show!" he exclaimed. "All of Austria is happy." Chancellor Christian Stoecker wrote on X: "What a great success — my warmest congratulations on winning #ESC2025! JJ is writing Austrian music history today!" The Vienna State Opera also expressed joy over the win. "From the Magic Flute to winning the Song Contest is somehow a story that can only take place in Austria," opera director Bogdan Roscic told the Austrian press agency APA. Several Austrian cities were quick to show their interest in hosting next year's contest. Innsbruck Mayor Johannes Anzengruber told APA that "not everything has to take place in Vienna. ... Austria is bigger than that," and the towns of Oberwart in Burgenland and Wels in Upper Austria also threw their hats into the ring. JJ himself said Saturday night he hoped that Vienna would get the next ESC which he would love to host together with his mentor, Conchita Wurst. A nail-biting final Israeli singer Yuval Raphaelcame second at an exuberant celebration of music and unity that was shadowed by the Gaza war andrattled by discordover Israel's participation. JJ won after a nail-biting final that saw Raphael scoop up a massive public vote from her many fans for her anthemic "New Day Will Rise." But she also faced protests from pro-Palestinian demonstrators calling for Israel to be kicked out of the contest over its conduct of thewar against Hamas in Gaza. At a post-victory press conference, JJ said the message of his song about unrequited romance was that "love is the strongest force on planet Earth, and love persevered. "Let's spread love, guys," said JJ, who added that he was honored to be the first Eurovision champion with Filipino heritage, as well as a proudly queer winner. Eclectic and sometimes baffling The world's largest live music event, which has been uniting and dividing Europeans since 1956, reached its glitter-drenched conclusion with a grand final inBaselthat offered pounding electropop, quirky rock and outrageous divas. Acts from 26 countries — trimmed from 37 entrants throughtwo elimination semifinals— performed to some160 million viewersfor the continent's pop crown. No smoke machine, jet of flame or dizzying light display was spared by musicians who had three minutes to win over millions of viewers who, along with national juries of music professionals, picked the winner. Estonia's Tommy Cashcame third with his jokey mock-Italian dance song "Espresso Macchiato."Swedish entry KAJ, which had been favorite to win with jaunty sauna ode "Bara Bada Bastu," came fourth. Several highly praised singers who had been tipped to win fell short, including French chanteuse Louane and soulful Dutch singer Claude. The show was a celebration of Europe's eclectic, and sometimes baffling, musical tastes. The war in Gaza clouded the contest This year's contest was roiled for a second year by disputes over Israel's participation. Raphael — a survivor of Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack on a music festival in southern Israel that triggered the Gaza war — was met by a mix of cheers and boos as she sang. Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR said a man and woman were stopped as they tried to climb over a barrier to the stage at the end of her song. It said a crew member was hit by paint thrown by the pair. Raphael's team said she was left "shaken and upset." The Oct. 7 cross-border attacks by Hamas militants killed 1,200 people, and roughly 250 were taken hostage into Gaza. More than 52,800 people in Gaza have been killed in Israel's retaliatory offensive, according to the territory's health ministry. Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protests both took place in Basel, though on a much smaller scale than at last year's event in Sweden. Hundreds of people marched through Basel just before the competition, waving Palestinian flags and chanting "Boycott Israel." Basel police said Sunday that the protest had not been authorized and that three officers and one protester were injured. Earlier on Saturday, a group of Israel supporters had gathered in Basel's cathedral square to root for Raphael and to show that "Jews belong in public spaces in Switzerland," Zurich resident Rebecca Laes-Kushner said. She said that "this is supposed to be about music, not about hate." The European Broadcasting Union, or EBU, which runs Eurovision, tightened the contest's code of conduct this year, calling on participants to respect Eurovision's values of "universality, diversity, equality and inclusivity" and its political neutrality. Eurovision director Martin Green told reporters that the organizers' goal was to "re-establish a sense of unity, calm and togetherness this year in a difficult world." Scarlett Johansson, who set a record for a woman with her seventh appearance as host, used her monologue to lead most of the current cast of the NBC sketch institution in a song sung to the tune of Billy Joel's "Piano Man." The performance looked back on an eventful year that included an election, anepic anniversary specialand astar-studded concert. "Sing us a song, it's your monologue, the 50th season is through," Johansson sang, along with Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner and others. "It's lasting forever, we did it together, and we got to spend it with you." Johansson teased, then took back, a guest appearance that would have been in keeping with the season's excess of guest stars. "Ladies and gentlemen, Billy Joel!" she shouted, before adding, "wrote this song." No post-season cast departures have been announced, so no emotional farewells were necessary, but Johansson and the cast joked in the song that Sarah Sherman would be gone. "It's been a great season and Sarah is leaving, we're all gonna miss you next year!" they sang. A stunned Sherman replied, "Wait, what? Did you guys hear something?" Johansson's husband, Colin Jost, is a writer on the show and anchor of the "Weekend Update" segment. Jost and co-anchor Michael Che returned to their annual season-finale tradition of writing and being forced to deliver wildly inappropriate jokes for each other. Johansson is the subject of many of the Che-written jokes, so this year Jost compelled Che to bring her out and apologize for once comparing part of her body to "Costco roast beef." The 50th season brought muchmedia discussionof who might run the show should 80-year-old creator Lorne Michaels ever step down. Some have suggested Jost might replace Michaels and Che forced Jost to address the issue with one of the jokes written for him. "It's SNL's 50th season, so I want to take a moment to say something to our boss," Jost said. "Lorne, retire, bitch! let me run the show." Jost also appeared in a pre-recorded, behind-the-scenes bit where Johansson has torrid sex with Yang after she confesses to Nwodim and Gardner that she has a crush on him, and learns he has only been publicly pretending to be gay "for the clout." Johansson has her heart broken when she learns Yang also has been hooking up with Nwodim, Gardner and guest starEmily Ratajkowski. In another behind-the-scenes digital short made by the three members of comedy group Please Don't Destroy, Johansson treats the trio to a first-class flight that becomes a luxe hip-hop video until the men panic when they learn they are landing at thetroubled airport of Newark, New Jersey. "I wouldn't say I 'regret' being a mother, not at all. I'm really happy to have kids, but sometimes, I would love to escape and get my old life back. It used to be so difficult for me to admit, even to my closest friend or to my sister, or to say it out loud. But it's so important to be able to do that," she said. "There will be many people who won't exactly punish me for it, but they will comment on it. It's one of our last taboos, for sure. We have this idea that once you become a mother, you turn into a saint. Especially when it comes to disabled kids. It didn't happen to me. I love my child, but I also wanted to be a filmmaker and have my career. I wanted to be more than a mother." In the film, Ester and her teenage son David head out on a road trip to Italy. "When I started to write, I was a single mother with a disabled son and second son who was just a baby. I was sitting in Prague, in my room, and realized: 'I don't want to make a depressing film,'" admitted Kirchnerová. "I wanted to make a film which would be joyful and full of sun and colors. I wanted something which would open up the horizon and feel transcendental." Imagining Anna Geislerová in the lead role helped her distance herself from the story. "This way, Ester became more like her and not me. But there's a bit of me in every character. I really enjoyed writing Zuza [their new friend played by Juliana Brutovská Ol'hová]. She reminded me of how I used to be with my friends when I was younger. Italy is basically a metaphor of a summer dream. Ester becomes more open also because of Zuza — she's the one who triggers this playfulness in her." She spent six months looking for David, played by David Vodstrčil. "The funniest thing is that he goes to the same school as my son. I had him right under my nose. I saw many families, which in a way was a good thing — they shared so many stories. Unlike his character, he's completely independent and has no trouble communicating, he doesn't need assistance, so he really needed to play that role. With Anna, they had a great chemistry. She calls him her fourth child." Despite lighthearted approach, Kirchnerová wanted to be honest — also about her protagonists' sexuality. "I didn't want to hide these aspects, and when we talk about the dignity of disabled people, we have to acknowledge their sexuality as well. They are sexual, just like you and me. We accept these kids when they are small and cuddly. But once they become teenagers, it's harder. This is something we need to talk about," she said. "If you are a mother of a disabled child, you are not allowed to be joyful or passionate. For me, sex means energy. It makes you feel alive. When Ester embarks on an affair, it feels like she's saying: 'I want to be alive. I want this for myself, because I am giving so much to others.'" It was a long road to get the film made. But Kirchnerová credits Torino Film Lab with making her believe it could be done. "In the Czech Republic, it was harder. Not because of this subject, but because I wanted to make a film in Italy. They probably thought it was too personal, even though I've never gone on a trip like that, and didn't finance it for many years. There were many men who couldn't connect with the main character. They would say she's 'unlikeable' and 'doesn't know what she wants.' Or that the film should be more plot-driven, with some big ending. I would always ask: 'Do you want me to go to Hollywood? They like big endings over there'." Ultimately, the project was picked by Cannes' L'Atelier. Before, Kirchnerová was also awarded the Cinéfondation Prize for best short film for "Baba." Now, she hopes "Caravan" will make people less afraid of portraying disability in their work. "Fear is probably the right word. Disabled people are just like other people. Zuza is such a great character, because she's not prejudiced. She looks at David and sees a teenage boy, not a diagnosis. She would behave the same with everyone else," she said. "For me, it's about freedom. People push you into the prison of what you should be. Especially when you're a mother, you're supposed to fulfil all these societal expectations. Making this film was like delivering a final 'fuck off.' Saying: 'Ok, now I'm going to do what I want. I'm going to live'." They have also performed songs live together, including "Heartland," which they co-wrote for Nelson's 1993 albumAcross the Borderline. "I've been going through a lot in my marriage, which is not anyone's business," she admitted, revealing that she had been staying in a hotel due to the "tough times" in her marriage. The social media personality expressed her frustration with the situation, calling it embarrassing for both her and her husband. "This whole f***ing thing is embarrassing.
